Disability Rights Washington Sues State Alleging Substandard Care At State-Run Rainier School
On September 2, 2022, Disability Rights Washington (DRW) sued the state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) alleging that conditions for residents at Rainier School, a state-run residential facility for individuals with intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD), violated federal and state law. DRW alleges that the state has failed to ensure that the school protects resident health and safety, such that the facility violates the residents’ rights under the 14th amendment of the Constitution, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Washington Law Against Discrimination.
