Medications are an increasingly important part of the management of chronic conditions. In 2016, prescription drug spending totaled $328.6 billion or 9.8% of the $3.3 trillion in health care spending. Comparatively in 2010, spending on prescription drugs total $253.1 billion or 9.7% of the $2.6 trillion in health care spending. For consumers with behavioral health and cognitive impairment there has been little change in the medications available to treat these conditions. However, new formulations of drugs and a larger pipeline is beginning to change this.
