According to a survey of 389 general hospitals conducted by the consulting firms Jackson and Coker, and Ernst & Whinney, psychiatrists were far down the list of medical specialties in terms of their contribution to general hospitals revenue base in 1987. According to this study, psychiatrists ranked 14th both in terms of revenue generated annually per physician, at $379,692, and number of admissions per year, at 66.
