SAMHSA Initiative Outlines New Option to Treating Prescription Painkiller Addiction Epidemic

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched a new professional and public education initiative to raise awareness about a new medication, buprenorphine, that can be used to treat addiction to opioids, such as prescription painkillers and heroin on December 10, 2002. Unlike other medications available to treat addiction, buprenorphine can be prescribed by physicians in their own offices.
