12.5% Of U.S. Children Uninsured: The Level Of Uninsurance Varies Greatly By State

The uninsurance rate for America's children was 12.5% (9.6 million) in 1999. Uninsurance rates for low-income children have held steady since 1997, but higher-income children experienced a statistically significant increase in uninsurance. This increase was concentrated among children with family incomes between 200 and 300 percent of poverty, who were 2 percentage points more likely to be uninsured in 1999 than in 1997.
