About 300,000 school-aged children in the United States have been diagnosed with autism as of 2003-2004, according to a large nationwide parent survey. The prevalence is estimated to be between 5.5 and 5.7 cases per thousand children aged four to 17. Boys were four times more likely to be identified as autistic than girls. Parent-reported autism for Hispanic children was less than the reported rate for the aggregate United States population.
