2004 Total Spending on Outpatient Mental Health Medications Hits $20 Billion

In 2004 total spending on mental health medications was $20 billion, more than double the $7.9 billon spent in 1997. The 150% increase in spending was led by spending on antidepressants, which more than doubled from $5.1 billion in 1997 to $12.1 billion in 2004.
