The total federal and state funding for child welfare services in the fifty states and District of Columbia was $17.7 billion in 2000. This was a 28.1% increase in budgets from 1998. California and New York had the largest amount of federal and state funding for child welfare services in 2000, at $2.4 billion and $1.9 billion respectively. Wyoming and North Dakota had the smallest budgets of federal for the same year, at $18.3 million . . .
