More than one-third of all hospitalizations of nursing home residents could be prevented if nursing staff recognized symptoms of increasing illness sooner and doctors were more readily available at the nursing homes. Nursing facilities with greater access to nurse practitioners and physicians assistants have fewer hospitalizations. When basic medical care at the facilities breaks down, nursing home residents are sent to hospitals to correct preventable problems.

These are findings of a study entitled, “Nursing Home Characteristics . . .
