In case you were wondering, consumer-run organizations do exist. The National Empowerment Center (NEC), a National Technical Assistance Center funded, in part, by the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), defines consumer-run organizations as organizations in which consumers make up the majority of the staff and the board of the organization. NECs mission is to carry a message of recovery, empowerment, hope, and healing to people who have been labeled with mental illness.
