HHS Warns Hospitals Against Cost-Cutting Deals

The Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Inspector General released an advisory bulletin warning hospitals that federal law prohibits gain sharing, or the practice of hospitals paying physicians to reduce or limit care to Medicare and Medicaid fee-for- service patients. Providers can be fined for knowingly making such payments. The advisory, which will be published in the Federal Register later in July, also warned against some clinical joint ventures.
