On July 24, 2003, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provided some guidance regarding compliance with HIPAA transactions and the October 16, 2003, deadline for covered entities to comply with HIPAA's electronic transaction and code sets provisions. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be responsible for enforcing the code set and electronic transaction laws. CMS will take a complaint-driven approach.
