While providing services to clients, nonprofit social services agencies often obtain identifiable health information. Social services agency (“SSA”) directors, however, often are unclear about whether the HIPAA privacy and security regulations issued under federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”) apply to their agencies.
