Most HMOs Do Not Use Contract Providers For Behavioral Health Services

Most HMOs use mental health providers affiliated with the HMO for at least some outpatient services, and nearly half of them use their own providers exclusively, according to a study by Maureen Schadel and Jon B. Christianson of Interstudy. The complete study covering various aspects of the administration of mental health by HMOs is expected to be published later this month.
The findings of Schadel and Christianson reveal that only 17.5% of HMOs use outside providers . . .
