Psychiatrists' yearly net income in 1987 averaged $102,700 compared to a median gross income of $85,000 in 1985, according to Background Data on the Economics of Psychiatric Practice. 88% of the profession is involved in patient care. 55% practice in their own offices and 91% of these are solo practitioners (compared with 72% of other physicians.) However, between 1980 and 1984, the number of psychiatrists in group practices nearly doubled.
