AMA and Pennsylvania Medical Society Request Investigation
The American Medical Association (AMA) and Pennsylvania Medical Society (PMS) announced March 22, 2000 that they have asked the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch an investigation into the market power and anti-competitive practices of two Pennsylvania-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association members. Specifically, the AMA and the PMS are asking DOJ to examine whether Independence Blue Cross (IBC) and Highmark, Inc., the dominant health plans in Pennsylvania, have maintained their market dominance by agreeing not to compete . . .
