Aetna to Drop Medicare HMO Coverage

Aetna Inc. plans to stop offering Medicare HMO coverage to seniors in several cities in the northeastern United States, California, and Texas next year, due to lack of profits. The company will announce which sites it will withdraw from on July 1, 2000, when it is required to inform the federal government. Aetna has already displaced 17,000 members this year and about 62,000 in 1999 by leaving other major Medicare HMO markets in the United States.
