No Extension of HIPAA Deadline
On September 11, 2003, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the federal government would not extend the October 16, 2003, compliance deadline of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) transactions and code sets rule. The announcement is not a surprise, as department officials have indicated for some time that an extension would not be forthcoming. However, CMS had indicated it would permit wide latitude for payers to implement contingency plans - such as accepting compliant and noncompliant claims - to keep paying claims . . .
