Patients With Depression Fair Better With Fewer Treatment Strategies Patients with depression who received effective medication or combinations of medications reached remission, but when more steps were required to determine an effective treatment patients experienced lower acute remission rates and higher relapse rates. Patients who required more treatment steps tended to have more severe depressive symptoms and more co-existing psychiatric and general medical problems than patients who achieved remission with just one treatment.
