Medicare PPS Proposed For Inpatient Psychiatric Care
A new set of rules regarding inpatient psychiatric prospective payment system (PPS) will affect about 2,000 facilities nationwide, including freestanding psychiatric hospitals and certified psychiatric units in general acute care hospitals. On November 28, 2003, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published proposed rules for prospective Medicare payments for inpatient psychiatric facilities. Currently, inpatient psychiatric facilities are exempted from the inpatient hospital PPS.
