About 9 Times More SNFs Than Hospitals Changed Hands From 2016 Through 2022

Changes of ownership have been much more common in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) than hospitals between 2016 and 2022. During this time, 3,236 nursing facilities (39.9 per 1,000) have changed ownership, compared to 348 hospitals (9.8 per 1,000). According to recent data released by the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), about 62.3% of purchased SNFs have a single organizational owner, while 18.2% have only individual owners.
