8-Week Lifestyle-Based Weight Management Program Reduces Sleep Apnea Severity & Need For CPAP Therapy
An eight-week interdisciplinary weight loss and lifestyle intervention significantly improved obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity and other outcomes compared with usual care alone. The intervention group had a 51% reduction in their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) readings, while the control group had no noticeable difference in AHI. The AHI reading is used to diagnose sleep apnea and determine the severity. At six months after completing the intervention, the intervention group's AHI was 57% lower.
After eight weeks, about 45.0% of participants in the intervention group no longer required continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. At 6 months . . .
