Children’s Mental Health National State Of Emergency Declared By Associations For Pediatricians, Child Psychiatrists & Children’s Hospitals
On October 19, 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Children’s Hospital Association declared a national state of emergency in children’s mental health due to rising rates of mental health problems among children, adolescents, and their families over the course of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency. The stresses of COVID-19 exacerbated problems that existed prior to the public health emergency. The three organizations said inequities due to structural racism contributed to disproportionate impacts on children from communities of color.
