Drug Overdose Death Rates Rose During COVID-19 Pandemic
The number of drug overdose deaths in the United States rose 28.8% during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, from 68,757 deaths in September 2019 to 87,203 deaths in September 2020. Overdose death rates rose the most in the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and South Carolina. Overdose death rates changed the least in South Dakota, New Hampshire, Alaska, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.
