DOJ Resolves Suit Against Opioid Manufacturer Purdue Pharma With $8 Billion In Fines; Purdue Pharma To Become A Public Benefit Company
On October 21, 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a global resolution of its criminal and civil investigations into the opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma LP (Purdue), and a civil resolution of its civil investigation into individual shareholders from the Sackler family, which owns Purdue Pharma. Purdue Pharma was accused of violating the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act from May 2007 through at least March 2017 by facilitating dispensing of its products, including OxyContin, without a legitimate medical purpose, and thus without lawful prescriptions. The resolution requires Purdue Pharma to pay $8 billion.
