HIV & Hepatitis B & C Testing Rates Low For Medicaid Beneficiaries Treated For Opioid Use Disorder
About 75% of Medicaid beneficiaries treated for opioid use disorder from 2016 to 2019 were not tested at the start of treatment for HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), or hepatitis C virus (HCV). During this period, the testing rate improved but remained low. HIV testing increased from 20% to 25%. Testing for HBV increased from 22% to 25%. Testing for HCV increased from 24% to 27%. Guidelines recommend that people starting medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder undergo testing for HIV, HBV, and HCV.
