Medicare Advantage Associated With Decreases In Hospitalization
Medicare Advantage (MA) members, particularly those enrolled in health maintenance organizations (HMOs), have lower hospitalization rates resulting from emergency department visits for ambulatory-care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) than traditional Medicare beneficiaries. The MA members were more likely to be discharged from the emergency department to home or to an observation stay than the traditional Medicare beneficiaries. Among MA members, those enrolled in an HMO were hospitalized less frequently following an emergency department visit for ACSCs than those enrolled in a preferred provider organization (PPO).
