Medicare In-Home Primary Care Program For Beneficiaries With Chronic Illness Reduces Cost For Sixth Straight Year
In 2019, the Medicare 'Independence at Home' (IAH) in-home primary care program for beneficiaries with chronic illness improved health outcomes and reduced costs for the sixth straight year. In 2019 the program reduced per beneficiary costs by $5,054.
The IAH Demonstration started in 2012 to provide Medicare beneficiaries with chronic illness and functional limitations with a complete range of home-based primary care services. The goal was to test whether home-based care can reduce the need for hospitalization, improve beneficiary and caregiver satisfaction, and lead to better health and lower costs to Medicare.
