New ASAM Guideline Provides Decision Support For Use Of Medications In Opioid Addiction Treatment

In September 2015, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) released a new 13-part guideline for treating opioid addiction that provides physicians with decision support for using buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone as part of individualized treatment at multiple levels of care. The guideline also provides recommendations on the use of naloxone, which can effectively reverse an opioid overdose.

The guideline outlines a standardized assessment. The assessments should gather the following information:
