President Biden Orders The Department Of Justice To End Use Of Private Prison Contracts
On January 26, 2021, President Biden signed in executive order directing the Department of Justice to eliminate the use of privately operated criminal detention facilities. Under this order, the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will not renew contracts with private organizations to provide criminal detention facilities. This order does not affect contracts issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for facilities to detain immigrants.
