Senior Living Occupancy Rose 2.2 Percentage Points Between The First & Fourth Quarters Of 2021 To 81%
In the fourth quarter of 2021, overall senior living occupancy was 81.0%, up 2.2 percentage points over 78.8% occupancy during the first quarter of 2021. Historically senior housing occupancy has been higher than 80%, and during the fourth quarter of 2019 was 88.0%. However, during 2020 and 2021, senior living occupancy rates declined due to factors related to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency (PHE), which began in March 2020. These factors included a moratorium on move-ins and potential resident concerns about the safety of congregate living settings.
