Costs Of Eating Disorders In The United States Total Nearly $400 Billion Per Year
The one-year cost of eating disorders in the United States totaled $391.2 billion in fiscal year 2018-2019. Eating disorders were defined as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and “otherwise specified feeding or eating disorder” (such as maladaptive thoughts and behaviors related to food, eating, and body image). The $391 billion includes $4.6 billion in medical costs, $60.2 billion for tangible economic costs outside the health system, and $326.5 billion for intangible losses in well-being.
