State Prison Three-Year Recidivism Rates Dropped From 50% To 39% Between 2005 & 2012
The three-year prison return rate of people released from state prison in 2012 dropped to 39%, as compared to about 50% in 2005. This 11-percentage point reduction persisted through the full five-year tracking period. The three-year prison return rate is the most commonly used measure of individuals that return to prison over time.
During the first year following release, about 19.9% of the 2012 group returned to prison, compared with 30.4% of the 2005 cohort. About 81% of prisoners age 24 or younger at release in 2012 were arrested within 5 years of release . . .
