U.S. Justice Department ‘Zero Tolerance’ Border Policy Failed To Plan To Reunite Families
When it implemented the “zero-tolerance” policy in April 2018 for families apprehended illegally entering the United States and the Southwestern border, the Department of Justice (DOJ) knew that family units would be separated but failed to plan effectively to ensure that parents and children could be reunited, according to a review by the DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG). Under this policy, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) referred family unit adults to DOJ for criminal prosecution and placed the children in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Department of Health and Human Services . . .
