U.S. National Median Age Increases To 38.8 Years

The median age in the United States increased by 3.4 years between 2000 and 2021, rising to 38.8 years, according to Census Bureau estimates. Nationally between 2020 and 2021, the median age increased by 0.3 years. Across the United States, median age increased in 92% of states, 57% of counties, and 76% of metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The Census Bureau anticipates that the median age will continue to rise due to lower birth rates and aging of the Baby Boom generation (born between 1948 and 1965) and Generation X (born 1965 to 1980).
