On January 14, 2020, two bills were introduced in the California legislature that seek to improve access to mental health and addiction disorder treatment by modifying requirements for health plans and insurers. Senate Bill (SB) 854 requires health plans and insurers to provide prescription benefits for medications to treat addiction, and place those medications on the lowest cost-sharing formulary tier. California SB 855 requires health plans to provide treatment for mental health and addiction disorder at parity with other medical conditions, for those issued, amended, or renewed on or after January 1, 2021.
