April 14, 2011 A comparative effectiveness review of treatments for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) found that the antipsychotic medications risperidone and aripiprazole showed benefit in reducing some problem behaviors common to ASD, including emotional distress, aggression, hyperactivity and self-injury. No medications used for ASDs improved social behaviors or communication skills, but several medications show promise and should be studied further.
