Psychiatrists Superior to Other Physicians in Detecting Alcoholism

OPEN MINDS The Behavioral Health & Social Service Industry Analyst Industry News The Johns Hopkins Hospital of Baltimore conducted a study that found that psychiatrists are superior to other physicians in diagnosing alcoholism. The results of the study were published in the January 20, 1989 issue of Journal of the American Medical Association. As part of the study, all new adult inpatient admissions were screened for alcoholism. Initial identification of an alcohol problem was determined by use of CAGE* and SMAST** questionnaires and a follow-up interview.
