What Are Provider Preventable Conditions (PPCs) & Why Should You Care?
Among the pay-for performance initiatives putting "teeth" into the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA) β value based purchasing, bundled payments, accountable care organizations β is authorization to deny payment of claims for provider preventable conditions (PPCs). PPC is an umbrella term for two categories of inpatient adverse events: hospital acquired conditions (HACs), and other provider-preventable conditions (OPPCs) (i.e., wrong surgery, wrong site, or wrong patient events). PPC penalties apply only to hospitals reimbursed under the Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), and exclude inpatient psychiatric facilities that are reimbursed under the Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Prospective Payment System . . .
