Assessing Payment Adequacy: Home Health Care Services
January 13, 2011 On January 13, 2011 the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) voted unanimously to recommend that Medicare beneficiaries pay a copayment for home health services. Designed to reduce fraud and unnecessary home health service utilization, the copayment would affect approximately 30 million beneficiaries. Medicaid would cover the cost of copayments for low-income dual eligible beneficiaries, who would be exempt under MedPACÂ’s recommendation. The commissioners did not officially recommend a copayment amount; however, MedPAC staff unofficially suggested a copayment of $150. The official recommendation now goes before Congress.
