January 19, 2011 In May 2009, a civil fraud whistleblower lawsuit was filed against Young Adult Institute, Inc. (YAI). The lawsuit, United States v. Young Adult Institute, Inc., alleged that YAI artificially inflated its expenses to receive additional funding from the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) by improperly categorizing its fundraising expenses, claiming that administrative staff were clinic social workers, and assigning staff compensation costs to other sites although the staff members never worked at the other sites.
