Recommended Action Items Regarding the Intersection of the Police & The Mental Health System in Portland
April 15, 2010 The Portland Police Bureau launched a mobile mental health crisis unit. The unit was formed in May 2010 with the goal of providing crisis intervention services and helping people with mental health or addiction disorders enter treatment programs. In 2010, the city had eight police shootings, most involving people in crisis due to untreated mental illness or addiction. In addition to providing crisis intervention services, officers attached to the unit also seek to build trust with people in the community known to have mental health or addiction disorders.
