July 21, 2010 This legislation requires New York-based insurance companies to provide coverage for both evidence-based and medically-necessary treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).The bill also explains how private health insurance companies are going to cover the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of ASD. Treatment would include interventions prescribed by a doctor that are evidence-based and clinically-proven. For example, the bill will cover treatment for physical health problems that frequently occur with ASD, along with speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral health treatments (such as Applied Behavioral Analysis), and other treatments necessary.
