British National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse Business Plan 2010-2011
September 14, 2010 EnglandÂ’s National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse, a division of the National Health Service, is planning to revise its policies on methadone treatment to focus on abstinence-focused treatment for opiate addiction. The shift is expected to include limits on how long prisoners can receive methadone treatment while incarcerated; time limits will also be extended to community-based treatment. New clinical protocols will focus on abstinence as the desired outcome of treatment. Long-term methadone maintenance treatment will be discouraged, but permitted on a case-by-case basis.
