Multi-State Study on Psychotropic Medication Oversight in Foster Care
September 15, 2010 Although research has indicated that children in the child welfare system are at least three times more likely than the general youth population to be prescribed psychotropic medications, a survey of state child welfare officials found that only 26 states have a written policies and oversight guidelines for the use of such medications. Nearly 60% of the state child welfare officials surveyed said they had a high level of concern about ensuring adequate oversight of psychotropic medications prescribed for foster youth.
