Ruling By 6th Court Of Appeals On Tyler v. Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department

On September 15, 2016, a federal appeals court ruled that a lifetime ban on gun ownership against someone previously institutionalized due to a psychiatric disorder could violate the individual’'s civil rights. The ruling was in response to an appeal by the plaintiff in Tyler v. Hillsdale County Sheriff's Department. Tyler applied to purchase a gun, but was denied a permit due to federal policy disqualifying individuals with psychiatric disorders from owning guns.
