Access to Mental Health Services at Indian Health Service and Tribal Facilities
October 1, 2011 The federal Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) sought to determine the extent to which American Indians and Alaska Natives have access to mental health services. They surveyed IHS and tribal facilities; 630 responded. About 82% provided mental health services, but about half reported that long travel distances for clients and staffing shortages created barriers to providing services.
