Anything Goes: Approval of Nonprofit Status by the IRS
October 15, 2009 Researchers Rob Reich, Ph.D.; Lacey Dorn, and Stefanie Sutton of Stanford University, reviewed Internal Revenue Service data for 2008 to determine the approval rate of applications for non-profit charitable status. They concluded that in 2008 the acceptance rate was 99%. From 1998 to 2008, the number of tax- exempt organizations in the United States has increased by 60%, to about 1.1 million.
