October 24, 2011 The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed revisions affecting health care professionals and provider organizations other than hospitals. The revisions eliminate outdated requirements and update others to reflect current practices while reducing administrative burden and costs.  One of the provisions will revise the certification inpection schedule for institutions serving individuals with intellectual disabilities to match the certification schedule for long-term care nursing homes. CMS also proposed revising federal language to eliminate the terms "mental retardation" and "mentally retarded" to prefer the broader terms "intellectual disability" and intellectually disabled."
