Youths Characteristics and Backgrounds Findings From the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement
December 8, 2010 A federal survey of youth between the ages of 12 and 20 years who are in juvenile justice residential placements found that 20% were parents or were expecting a child. It is the first study to estimate the prevalence of pregnant or parenting youth in custody. Among males in custody, 15% reported that they had children; among females, 9% reported having children.
